Thad Jones has influenced my writing from the day I began. I have always been fascinated with his ability to use the big band as a fast and beautiful vehicle at the same time. Thad’s ballad “A Child is Born” made me have an epiphany when it comes to writing for the big band, and I try to capture that moment I had throughout the piece. THWOM stands for Thad, watch over me, and it is truly a prayer to Thad Jones. I hope he continues to watch over all of us, and guide us towards our greatest discoveries in jazz and in life.
